This week, we found ourselves in the fortunate position of having a ‘golden day’. That is to say, a day on which we do not work OR travel, something of a rarity. I could think of no better place to have such a day!
Colorado Springs is a cool town located just to the East of some beautiful mountains. In fact my hotel room looks out over the plains to Pikes Peak in the distance. Something well worth getting up for to look at in the morning.
Myself, Terry, Tony and Jordan got an early start and caught a ride out to one of the local attractions, the Garden of the Gods. This beautiful park contains some incredible and iconic rock formations which came in to being millions of years ago. It is often considered one of the most beautiful things to see, not just in America, but in the entire world and I have to say, I agree.
We were dropped off at the Balanced Rock and made our way through the park on foot. It is only about a 10-15 cab ride from the city of Colorado Springs.
The Garden of the Gods does not cover a huge area. We were able to hike to the very North of the area and make our way back down to where we started within around 4 hours and we got to see everything we wanted to.
We were blessed with perfect weather. The day before we had subzero temperatures and I wouldn’t like to be out there without any shade in the middle of Summer. One thing I had underestimated is the altitude. We, each of us, at one point or another found ourselves a little short of breath or slightly nauseas. My advice is to carry plenty of water and snacks and take it easy if you are a sea level dweller like I am!
